THE HISTORY OF THE CURRY

For many people, it represents their favourite foreign cuisine. However, if you were to ask them how it has evolved, likely, they would not be able to give you an answer beyond “it comes from India”. Here at ChefOnline, we are proud to not only be able to offer our customers an online takeaway delivery service. We are pleased to provide a brief education on the history of curries and the journey that has shaped and changed them over the centuries. Should you be interested in educating yourself, all the relevant information can be found below.

Ancient Beginnings

If you are attempting to trace the origins of the curry, you need to look back to ancient times. The classic combination of a pestle and mortar has been found to have been utilised as far back as 2600 BCE. In Mohenjo-Daro, an archaeological site that is situated in Pakistan, there have been traces of crushed mustard, cumin, and tamarind pods, but to name a few examples.

One of the spices that can trace its origins back to 2000 BCE is black pepper, known by some as Kali Mirch. As it is native to the southern regions of India, it is no surprise that it has been utilised for such a long time.

Mughal Expansion

For anyone that did not already know, the Mughal Empire was founded in 1526 and remained as one of the greatest South Asian empires for more than three centuries. The main reason that this had a profound effect on the flavour and composition of curries, is because it made available a greater array of ingredients and spices. No longer were people limited to what was produced locally; trading networks greatly improved the quality of curries across the continent.

British Infatuation

Curries, and Indian cuisine in general, did not make itself known to the British population until the 17th Century. However, once it was introduced, it took the culinary world by storm. Having been accustomed to bland boiled meats, the spices originating from India brought with them flavours that could not even have been dreamed of. From then on, the curry has been a staple of the food industry in Britain – major boosts in popularity can be seen in the 1940s, as well as the 1970s. Curries have also had a significant impact in the world of fusion food; elements of curries, such as their core spices, can be used in meals such as burgers and pizzas.
