Unusual Indian Dishes for When You Fancy Something New

India is known all over the world as a melting pot of cultures. It also has an interesting mix of culinary traditions.

If you want to taste something new, India has a lot in store for you. It is a haven for foodies, enthusiasts, and curious people who can’t say no to a culinary adventure.

Here are some of the Indian dishes that you can try.

Puranpoli

Puranpoli is a sweet flatbread that comes from southern India. Traditionally, it is made from senaga pappu or plain flour, jaggery or unrefined cane sugar, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, and ghee or clarified butter. A tawa or pan is used for cooking the flatbread until it is brown.

Misa Mach Poora

This Indian dish originated from Mizoram, a state located in the northeastern part of the country. It is normally made by adding coriander and peppercorn to some shrimps, wrapping them with banana leaves, then grilling them over charcoal.

It is easy to prepare, but don’t let its simplicity fool you, as this dish is one of the tastiest seafood dishes to come out from India.

Bhutte Ka Kees

This popular street food comes from Indore, the most populous city of Madhya Pradesh. It is basically grated corn flavoured with spices then boiled with milk, which is an unusual way to prepare vegetables.

Nevertheless, Bhutte Ka Kees is delicious and very satisfying, just like the other popular dishes from Indore, like chaat and several dairy sweets.

Mahni

Mahni is a sweet and sour urad bean or black gram, a popular dessert in Himachal Pradesh. Other ingredients include dry mango powder, jaggery, and aromatic spices.

It is usually prepared during special events like weddings or when entertaining special guests. So if you feel like giving yourself a special treat, try Mahni.

Benami Kheer

Benami Kheer is prepared using thinly sliced garlic as the main ingredient. The garlic is boiled three times with a pinch of food-grade saltpetre or potassium nitrate.

The lengthy boiling process is done to remove the oleophilic properties of garlic, while the saltpetre keeps it crispy.

After this, it is cooked with concentrated milk solids or khova, some full-fat milk, and a pinch of green cardamom, making a tasty dessert that is distinctively Indian.

Irachi Ishtu

Irachi Ishtu comes from Kerala, a state located at the southwestern tip of the Indian Peninsula known throughout the country for its spicy food. However, Irachi Ishtu is one of the few exceptions.

This popular Indian dish is a thin stew that uses chicken, lamb, or beef as the main ingredient. It is cooked with coconut milk and some veggies.

The resulting taste is subtle and soothing, and the dish is best when paired with steamed rice or rice pancakes. So if you order this, make sure that you ask for rice as well.

Unidhiyu

Another great option for vegetarians, Unidhiyo is made from a wide variety of vegetables. It originated from Gujarat, a state of India that straddles a part of its western coast.

This curry dish uses eggplants, peas, green beans, potatoes, purple yam, and other seasonal veggies. The mixture of healthy ingredients is slow-cooked to an even pulp.

Another interesting thing about Unidhiyo is that it is cooked in earthen pots turned upside down, and the heat is made above it.
