Popular Pizza Takeaways in The UK

Who doesn't love pizza? If you are in the UK, you can choose through a varied list of the best pizzerias. Whether you want a New York-style slice or an artisanal sourdough base, London has some of the best pizzerias in the UK.

Some of these shops are even internationally recognised and and won restaurant awards. So if you haven't tried these yet, you are definitely missing out. Check out the list below to make sure you have tried all of them.

Dough & Brew, Warwick

For the third year running, this eatery has reached the finals of the National Pizza Awards. Aside from the food, much of its appeal stems from its child-friendly strategy, which includes a film club where children can watch movies via wireless headphones while adults enjoy their lunch in relative peace.

The wood-fired Neapolitan sourdough pizza toppings include mac 'n' cheese, and British pulled short-rib beef with caramelised onions, stilton, and mozzarella.

The Flat, Exeter

Chloe Whipple and Pietro Chiereghin opened this restaurant in 2017. They serve "planet-friendly" vegan and vegetarian versions of northern Italian pizzas. All hand-stretched bases are gluten-free, and the kitchen makes its own vegan mozzarella and parmesan.

Bestsellers include smoked halloumi, smoked vegan mozzarella, mushrooms, red onion chutney, and ground pepper, as well as peppers, olives, spinach, mixed nuts, and fresh chili. They are available in small (6-inch) and regular (10-inch) sizes.

Bertha’s, Bristol

Graham Faragher, a former engineer for the McLaren Formula One team, and his wife, Kate, founded Bertha's as a street-food business, slinging pizzas from a converted canary-yellow Land Rover Defender before launching a brick-and-mortar pizzeria in Bristol's developing harbourside culinary sector.

For Graham, it's all about a long fermentation for the sourdough (three to five days at Bertha's) and seasonal South West ingredients for the toppings.

The Truffle Shuffle, with its creamy smoked mushroom and truffle base, mozzarella, and mushrooms, remains a fan favourite, as are specials like the Kimcheese, which combines wild garlic and chard kimchi with Devon Blue.

"It's all about the daft ideas," adds Graham, who has invented several unexpected ice creams at Bertha's, including the Mint Air-Woah (aerated Valrhona dark chocolate swirled with fresh mint gelato).

Pi, Dublin

Pi, founded in 2018 by John Savage and Reggie White, a former auctioneer educated at Ballymaloe Cookery School, is widely recognised as serving the greatest wood-fired pizzas in the Irish capital. The toppings, made with '00' flour from Naples and fermented for 72 hours, include cheese and charcuterie from artisanal Irish producers like Fingal Ferguson's Gubbeen Smokehouse. Pi's pizza with crushed tomato, fresh basil, scamorza, nduja, honey, Parmigiano Reggiano, and garlic was chosen as Dublin's best this year.

Stone Pizza, Forest Gate

If you’re craving some Italian pizza then look no further than Stone Pizza. Located in Forest Gate, this place is great for Italian pizzas and pasta.

They have amazing range of pizzas, starting from Margherita to Bbq Chicken. They also have good options for vegetarians, you will not regret trying their Garden Pizza. And if you love pineapple, do not forget to try their Hawai pizza.

Apart from pizza, you can also try their delicious pasta, burgers, and starter items. You can always order online when you’re craving delicious pizzas.

Poco, Leeds

Poco is a tiny restaurant that serves Sicilian street food. It was founded by Elvi Drizi, who also owns the famed Leeds restaurant Culto. 'poco' means 'a little bit' in Italian, and that is exactly what the restaurant on Kirkstall Road provides, with delightful tiny morsels such as real Sicilian pizza al taglio served by the slice from enormous rectangular trays.

All the chefs are from Sicily, and they exclusively rely on original recipes and Italian produce. Poco's typical price is roughly £3-4 per dish, and most of its customers are young professionals and students.

Elvi says, "Our goal is to provide affordable and authentic food to the people of Leeds." We keep our rates as low as possible to make our food affordable to our clients, which is why most of them visit Poco at least once a week for lunch or supper.

Baked in Brick, Birmingham

What began as a hand-built wood-fired pizza oven and hut at the base of owner Lee Desanges' yard evolved into a mobile pizzeria in a converted Mini that competes in the European Street Food Awards. In 2018, the company expanded to a permanent restaurant in Birmingham, with dough produced to a unique recipe using two mixes of '00' flour and cooked in an English-built wood-fired oven.

"Our toppings are all about flavour and sometimes not so traditional," says Lee, referring to the Blanco pizza with béchamel sauce, oak-smoked chicken, sautéed rosemary potatoes, and rosemary oil, as well as the wood-fired squash, roasted courgette, and crispy kale.

Paesano Pizza, Glasgow

Paesano Pizza, a Glasgow institution, claims to have been the first to introduce true, traditional Napoletana pizza to the city, and the original location on Miller Street has been joined by a location on Great Western Road.

The bases are a yeast-sourdough hybrid that has been proven for over 48 hours to produce a light and thin crust on hallmark pizzas like spicy salami, tomato sugo, mozzarella, and extra virgin olive oil.

Scream for Pizza, Newcastle upon Tyne

Friends Victoria Featherby and Alex Walker founded Scream for Pizza after meeting in 2010 while working in a cruise ship company's entertainment department. They discovered common ground in their love of pizza, and in 2014, between contracts, they decided to travel to Naples to take a seven-week pizza-making school at Enzo Coccia's renowned La Notizia restaurant.

They returned to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and served their masterpieces from a J7 Peugeot, a former French army ambulance turned pizza truck nicknamed Goldie. They ultimately launched their first pizzeria in the Sandyford neighbourhood in May 2019, but Goldie continues to make frequent appearances throughout the city.

Scream for Pizza's bestsellers include the crab thermidor (which made it to the finals of the British Street Food Awards) and a deconstructed fried tiramisu pizza.

Final Thoughts

Most of them have received restaurant awards for their delectable pizzas, so the next time you order pizza from them, know that you are ordering from the best. What are you waiting for, then? Order some pizza and get the party going.
